Title: Rethinking “Letter of the Week”: Using Environmental Print to Teach Phonemic Awareness
Program Description: This session will explore authentic strategies and activities to enhance early literacy for all young children, including those with and without delays or disabilities. Are there better ways to teach early literacy (letters of the alphabet and phonemic awareness) than using “letter of the week,” which is a format often used in early childhood classrooms? This session describes how to use environmental print, children’s names, and other authentic activities to teach letters and sounds that are developmentally appropriate for all young children.
